Lotus Esprits Aren't Invincible, and Neither are You

Writer: Natasha HNatasha H

The second exotic car I bought in my 20s was a Lotus Esprit Turbo. I'm not going to lie to you, I wanted to be James Bond. But mine was red and sadly didn't turn into a submarine. But I would race that thing all over the place: Circuit Mont Tremblant, Watkins Glen, Mosport. I had the whole kit: the driving gloves, the helmet, and For Your Eyes Only playing in the CD changer. Time of my life.I was very competitive and one day my youthfulness got the best of me. I qualified for the race on pole position in the rain - which I dedicated to the true 'Regenmeister' Michael Schumacher.  I then led the race for approximately 4 laps, rarely bothering to look in my mirrors. Why would I? I had this race in the bag. Until I didn't. In corner 3 a competitor came flying up the inside to take the next turn from me. There is a phrase in racing called "seeing the red mist", which means the tendency to lose your cool. I was so upset that in the very next corner I dove in beside him a little too late, locked my brakes and banged into his right mid-section. I spun off, stalled, my race over. He managed to recover and won the race. I didn't want to settle for second, but instead settled for last and an expensive repair bill.

Keeping your cool is crucial to staying in one piece on the racetrack. It's also crucial to succeeding in trading. The market is going to throw you all kinds of curveballs. How do you keep your cool? By having a plan and a strategy that can handle adversity. A plan that can evolve with markets in order to extract trading edge wherever it may lie. A good system has rules for every kind of market. Rules that keep you out of trouble. Risk-gauges and indicators that steer you clear of obstacles. A step-by-step process that keeps you out of the emotional state and in the rational one. Emotion is the enemy of the racer and trader.

Risk-managed options selling for cash flow? Now there's a novel idea. But you only get it from someone who has traded options and volatility professionally for almost 3 decades. Someone who made millions in both bull AND bear markets. Someone who understands how to do this the right way and avoid the expensive repair bills. That’s why we’re together. Actual strategy returns from live portfolios may differ materially from hypothetical returns. There is no substitute for actual returns from a live portfolio. HYPOTHETICAL PERFORMANCE IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF FUTURE RETURNS. In fact, hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations and no representation is being made that any trade will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown or that a market for securities will exist as shown. There are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trade or trading program.

It is possible that the markets or pricing will be better or worse than shown in the projections; that the actual results of an investor who invests in the manner these projections suggest will be better or worse than the projections; and that an investor may lose money by investing in the manner the projections suggest. Simulated returns may be dependent on the market and economic conditions that existed during the period. Future market or economic conditions can adversely affect the returns.
